As a Senior Microbiologist, Dr. David Boyle is developing microbial-based processes that will be used to increase the value of agricultural materials. For example, the microbes can increase protein content, remove anti-feedants and pre-digest otherwise non-digestible components in grains.

David has worked for several different research organizations, including eight years with the Nova Scotia Research Foundation and six years with New Brunswick's Research and Producitivity Council (RPC). In addition to his work with ABVC, David is president of Maritime MicroBiologicals Inc., which he built from the ground up beginning in 1996. This research-oriented company developed new fungal-based controls for insect pests, bacterial-based controls for mushroom diseases, and new formulations of “green” control agents for use against plant pathogens.  The company also developed methods for growing a wide variety of mushrooms with food and nutraceutical value. In other research, David developed new fungal-based methods for cleaning soils that were contaminated with wood preservatives. Interestingly, some of the fungi that were most effective at degrading these contaminants also produce mushrooms that are edible and have high nutraceutical value.

David is an enthusiastic, inquisitive, active research scientist with interests in many areas of basic and applied biology and he enjoys sharing
his enthusiasm for biology with others. He has recently been appointed Adjunct Professor at NSAC, where he anticipates teaching mycology and collaborating with other members of the research community.
